Meet Friday’s class speaker: Lara Salahi

5253306Usually when I have a class speaker, I introduce them with an anecdote about what they’re like at work, about stories we’ve worked on together. I cannot do this with Lara Salahi.

See, we’ve never met.

I am not, of course, randomly pulling speakers off the street. Lara and I connected online through a group called JAWS — Journalists and Women Symposium — and I’m thrilled she agreed to speak to my students.

Lara was part of the Boston Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

Here comes the big block quote from her website where you get envious about her career:

Lara shoots, writes, and edits her own stories. She has also created, contributed to, and manages numerous websites. She has worked in local news, network and cable television, international print, and documentary film, and her work has been featured on numerous news sites and blogs. 

She field produces pieces in New England for ABC News shows including Good Morning America and World News with Diane Sawyer. Lara previously worked with ABC News’ Medical Unit, where she produced digital and on-air health stories. 

She previously wrote an online column for called Ultra Sound Pregnancy, which took a closer look at trends on fertility, pregnancy, and delivery. She also hosted of the online video series, “Be Well, Boston,” which explored the latest lifestyle and health trends around town. She also wrote for the weekly “Be Well” section of the Boston Globe which analyzes the latest scientific studies to offer a brief and simple look at the findings and what it means for you.  

Also, a key point for Introduction to Journalism students who will have a final involving veterans: she is a proud Army wife and serves military families as the Family Readiness Group chairperson for a battalion in the Massachusetts Army National Guard.

Students: Remember, you are in charge of this group interview. Come prepared with questions. You will be live-Tweeting during class — the person who Tweets the most gets a Starbucks card — and writing a story about Lara’s talk.
