A guide for ENGL 2501 and ENGL 3801
Must-read for my journalism students: the Boston Globe’s Sunday story on Boston’s busing crisis from 40 years ago.
History lesson for the kids in their 20s:
Brown vs. the Board of Education struck down the concept of “separate but equal” schools, bringing about a federal mandate for cities with segregated schools to integrate. In Boston, that caused an ugly flashpoint when parents in mostly white South Boston objected to children from mostly black Roxbury coming to the schools there, while their children were also bused from their neighborhood.
Check out the whole package if you can, which features archival photos, videos and an oral history.
